Mid-Infrared Spectral Diagnosis of Submillimeter Galaxies

چکیده
We present deep mid-infrared spectroscopy with the Spitzer Space Telescope of 13 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N) field. We find strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in all of our targets which allows us to measure mid-IR spectroscopic redshifts and place constraints on the contribution from star formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity to the mid-IR emission. In the high signal-to-noise ratio composite spectrum of SMGs, we find that the hot dust continuum from an AGN contributes at most 30% of the mid-IR luminosity. Individually, only 2/13 SMGs have continuum emission dominating the mid-infrared luminosity; one of these SMGs, C1, remains undetected in the deep X-ray images but shows a steeply rising continuum in the mid-IR indicative of a Compton-thick AGN. We find that the mid-IR properties of SMGs are distinct from those of 24μm-selected ULIRGs at z ∼ 2; the former are predominantly dominated by star formation while the latter are a more heterogeneous sample with many showing significant AGN activity. We fit the IRS spectrum and the mid-IR to radio photometry of SMGs with template spectral energy distributions to determine the best estimate of the total infrared luminosity from star formation. While many SMGs contain an AGN as evinced by their X-ray properties, our multi-wavelength analysis shows that the total infrared luminosity, LIR, in SMGs, is dominated by star formation and not AGN activity. Mid - infrared spectroscopy of two luminous submillimeter galaxies at z ∼ 2 . 8
Using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of two bright submillime-ter galaxies. SMMJ02399-0136 at z=2.81 shows a superposition of PAH emission features and a mid-infrared continuum, indicating significant and roughly equal contributions to its bolometric luminosity from star formation and from a Compton-thi...

متن کاملMid-infrared Identification of Faint Submillimeter Sources
Faint submillimeter sources detected with the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope have faced an identification problem due to the telescope’s broad beam profile. Here we propose a new method to identify such submillimeter sources with a mid-infrared image having a finer point spread function. The Infrared Space Observatory has provided a very deep 6.7μ...
متن کاملA mid - infrared spectroscopic study of submillimeter galaxies : luminous starbursts at high redshift
We present rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 13 submillime-ter galaxies, obtained using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The sample includes exclusively bright objects from blank fields and cluster lens assisted surveys that have accurate interferometric positions. We find that the majority of spectra are well fitted by a starburst template...
متن کاملImaging of High Redshift Submillimeter Galaxies at 16 and 22μm with the Spitzer/irs Peak-up Cameras: Revealing a Population at Z>2.5
We present broad band imaging observations obtained with the “peak up” imagers of the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) at wavelengths of 16μm and 22μm for a number of sources detected primarily at submillimeter wavelengths, which are believed to be at high, though undetermined, redshift. We targeted 11 sources originally detected by SCUBA and 5 submillimeter sources detected ...
متن کاملA Near-infrared Analysis of the Submillimeter Background and the Cosmic Star-formation History
We use new deep near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) observations to analyze the 850 μm image of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North region around the Hubble Deep FieldNorth. We show that much of the submillimeter background at this wavelength is picked out by sources with H(AB) or 3.6 μm(AB) < 23.25 (1.8 μJy). These sources contribute an 850 μm background of 24 ± 2 Jy deg. ...
